Most people use Claude like a slightly smarter search engine. They type a question, read the answer, and close the tab. That's a bit like buying a decent car and only ever using it to sit in the driveway.
There are four distinct levels to how you can use Claude — each one meaningfully more useful than the last. This guide walks through all of them, including a fourth level that most people haven't even heard of yet.
The four levels
Real outcomes from Claude Code
None of these required a developer on staff. They required someone willing to describe clearly what they needed.
Recruitment firm
Built a custom CRM with automated proposal generation and e-signature integration — replacing three separate tools and a manual process that took two hours per proposal.
Professional services
Built a client-facing portal for document collection, cutting the back-and-forth of onboarding from two weeks to two days.
Retail business
Built a custom pricing tool that applied their margin rules and supplier cost changes automatically, replacing an unwieldy spreadsheet that only one person understood.
Where to Start
If you are new to Claude, spend a week at Level 1. Get Memory set up, try different models, and turn on Code Execution. These changes alone will improve your daily output.
If you already use Claude regularly, Level 2 will repay the setup time quickly. Creating Projects with proper Instructions is the single biggest efficiency gain most business owners leave on the table.
The gap between someone using Claude at Level 1 and someone using it at Level 4 is not intelligence or technical ability. It is mostly just knowing what is available.
